our Speaker:
Peter A. Johnson, Ph.D., is the Direct Marketing Association's
(DMA) research strategy and platforms vice president. Since
joining DMA in 2001, Dr. Johnson's research has focused on the
economics of direct marketing channels.
Johnson's
regulatory impact analyses, benchmarking, and best practice
research cover such topics as the economic costs of privacy
legislation, US Postal Service reform, remote sales taxation,
the impact of the National Do Not Call Registry on the teleservices
industry, and the economics of email marketing.
Dr.
Johnson's forecasting work includes DMA's Quarterly Business
Review (QBR) and the annual Power of Direct Marketing reports,
which benchmark multichannel direct marketing's economic impact
in the United States, including advertising expenditures, sales
revenue, and employment.
DMA's
government affairs and corporate responsibility efforts with
federal and state lawmakers and regulatory agencies make extensive
and effective use of Dr. Johnson's research on channel economics.
In 2002, Johnson co-authored a brief submitted to the United
States Supreme Court on behalf of DMA regarding the value of
customer data to direct marketing.
Before
joining DMA, Johnson was a professor of public policy at Columbia
University, where he is still affiliated. He also has served
as a faculty member of Bryn Mawr College, McGill University,
and the Union Institute, publishing numerous books and articles
in the fields of government regulation of markets and marketing.
He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Marketing
Accountability Standards Board.
Dr.
Johnson received his Ph.D. in public policy and government from
Cornell University in 1991. He received bachelor's degree in
politics and economics from the University of Toronto and a
master's in public policy from Queen's University in Kingston,
Ontario.
